Mini Air Fryer Blooming Onions

Posted on September 11, 2025

Absolutely! Mini Air Fryer Blooming Onions are crispy, adorable, and perfect for snacking or serving as a fun appetizer. You get all the crispy satisfaction of a blooming onion β€” without the deep-frying mess.

πŸ§… Mini Air Fryer Blooming Onions

πŸ•’ Prep Time: 15 mins | Cook Time: 15–18 mins

Makes: 4 mini onions

πŸ§‚ Ingredients:

  • 4 small yellow onions (golf ball to tennis ball size)

  • 2 eggs, beaten

  • 1/2 cup buttermilk (or milk with a splash of vinegar)

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (panko = extra crispy)

  • 1 tsp paprika

  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

  • 1/2 tsp onion powder

  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

  • Spray oil (for air fryer)

πŸ”₯ Instructions:

βœ… Step 1: Prepare the onions

  1. Peel the onions, leaving the root end intact.

  2. Cut each onion into quarters, but don’t slice all the way through β€” leave about 1/2 inch at the base.

  3. Then cut each quarter in half to make 8 sections. Gently separate the petals with your fingers.

πŸ’‘ Tip: Soak onions in cold water for 5–10 minutes to help them “bloom” more and reduce sharpness.

βœ… Step 2: Set up your breading station

  1. Mix flour, breadcrumbs, and all spices in one bowl.

  2. In another bowl, whisk eggs and buttermilk together.

βœ… Step 3: Bread the onions

  1. Dredge each onion in the flour mixture, making sure to get into the petals.

  2. Dip in the egg mixture, let excess drip off.

  3. Dredge again in the flour/breadcrumb mix, pressing gently to coat.

βœ… Step 4: Air fry

  1. Preheat your air fryer to 350Β°F (175Β°C).

  2. Spray the basket and the onions with a bit of oil to help them crisp.

  3. Place onions cut side up in the air fryer (work in batches if needed).

  4. Cook for 15–18 minutes, until golden and crispy.

πŸ₯£ Dipping Sauce (Optional but Amazing):

Mix together:

  • 1/4 cup mayo

  • 1 tbsp ketchup

  • 1 tsp horseradish (or more for heat)

  • Dash of paprika, garlic powder, and a little lemon juice

🧊 Tips:

  • If using larger onions, increase cook time and slice them into more petals.

  • Use gluten-free breadcrumbs and flour if needed.

  • Want extra crunch? Add crushed cornflakes or crackers to the coating.

Would you like a spicy version, or one with cheese stuffed between the petals? I can whip that up too!
