FRIED POTATOES AND ONIONS

Posted on September 22, 2025

You got it! Here’s a simple, classic, and seriously delicious recipe for Fried Potatoes and Onions — Southern-style, skillet-fried, and golden brown with just the right amount of crisp and flavor. 🥔🧅

🧄 Fried Potatoes and Onions (Skillet Style)

🍽️ Serves: 4

⏱️ Time: ~30 minutes

Perfect as a side for breakfast, dinner, or with eggs and hot sauce!

🧂 Ingredients:

  • 4 medium potatoes (Russet or Yukon Gold work best)

  • 1 medium yellow onion, sliced thin

  • 3 tbsp oil (vegetable, olive, or bacon grease for max flavor)

  • 1 tbsp butter (optional, adds richness)

  • Salt & pepper, to taste

  • ½ tsp garlic powder

  • ½ tsp paprika or smoked paprika (optional)

  • Optional: chopped parsley, green onions, or a dash of hot sauce

🔪 Prep:

  • Wash and slice potatoes into ¼-inch rounds or dice into small cubes.

  • Peel and thinly slice the onion.

  • Optional: Soak potatoes in cold water for 10–15 minutes, then drain and pat dry — this helps them get extra crispy.

🍳 Instructions:

  1. Heat oil in a large cast iron or nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add butter if using.

  2. Add potatoes in an even layer. Don’t overcrowd — let them brown!

    • Let cook undisturbed for about 5–6 minutes until bottoms are golden.

  3. Flip and stir, then add the sliced onions.

    • Season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika.

  4. Continue to cook uncovered, stirring every 2–3 minutes, until potatoes are fork-tender and crispy, and onions are caramelized — about 20–25 minutes total.

  5. Taste and adjust seasoning. Garnish if desired.

🔁 Optional Add-ins:

  • Bell peppers for color & sweetness

  • Chopped bacon or sausage (cook first, then add potatoes)

  • Cheese at the end for melty goodness

  • A splash of apple cider vinegar or hot sauce for zing

🥄 Serving Suggestions:

  • With eggs and toast for breakfast

  • Alongside steak, pork chops, or fried chicken

  • As a base for hash bowls or loaded potato skillets
