Absolutely — here’s a classic, crispy, Southern-style recipe for Fried Green Tomatoes that nails that tangy-inside, crunchy-outside perfection. Whether you’re from the South or just craving a comfort food staple, these are totally worth making.

🍅 Fried Green Tomatoes (Classic Southern Style)

🕒 Prep Time: 15 mins | Cook Time: 15 mins

Serves: 4

🧂 Ingredients:

  • 3–4 firm green tomatoes, sliced 1/4-inch thick

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour

  • 2 large eggs

  • 2 tablespoons milk or buttermilk

  • 1/2 cup cornmeal

  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (or crushed crackers/panko for extra crunch)

  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika (optional)

  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)

  • Vegetable oil (for frying)

🔥 Instructions:

  1. Prep tomatoes:
Slice the tomatoes and sprinkle both sides with salt. Let them sit on a paper towel for 10–15 minutes to draw out moisture. Pat dry.

  2. Set up your dredging station:

    • Bowl 1: Flour + pepper (and paprika/garlic powder, if using)

    • Bowl 2: Beaten eggs + milk

    • Bowl 3: Cornmeal + breadcrumbs

  3. Dredge the tomatoes:

    • First, dip each slice in the seasoned flour.

    • Then coat in the egg mixture.

    • Finally, press into the cornmeal-breadcrumb mix until well coated.

  4. Heat oil:
In a large skillet, heat about 1/4–1/2 inch of vegetable oil over medium to medium-high heat (about 350°F if using a thermometer).

  5. Fry:
Carefully place tomato slices in the hot oil (don’t overcrowd the pan). Fry 2–3 minutes per side or until golden brown and crispy.

  6. Drain & serve:
Place on a paper towel-lined plate. Sprinkle with a little more salt while hot.

🥣 Dipping Sauce Ideas:

  • Remoulade: Mayo, mustard, hot sauce, pickle juice

  • Ranch dressing

  • Spicy aioli: Mayo + sriracha or hot sauce + garlic

🧊 Tips & Variations:

  • Air fryer version: Spray coated tomatoes with oil and cook at 400°F for 8–10 minutes, flipping halfway.

  • Make it gluten-free: Use GF flour and breadcrumbs.

  • Add parmesan to the breading for an extra flavor boost.

  • Try pimento cheese or goat cheese on top for a fancy twist.
