Dirty Rice is a classic Creole and Cajun dish from Louisiana made with white rice, ground meat, and flavorful spices. It gets its “dirty” look from the browned meat and spices that coat the rice — and it’s packed with bold, savory flavor!
🍚 Classic Dirty Rice Recipe
Ingredients:
-
1 cup long grain white rice (uncooked)
-
2 tablespoons oil or butter
-
1/2 lb ground beef or ground pork (or use ground chicken/turkey)
-
1/4 lb chicken livers, finely chopped (optional but traditional for authentic flavor)
-
1 small onion, finely chopped
-
1 bell pepper, finely chopped
-
2 celery stalks, finely chopped
-
3 cloves garlic, minced
-
2 teaspoons Cajun or Creole seasoning (adjust to taste)
-
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
-
2 1/4 cups chicken broth
-
Salt and black pepper, to taste
-
Optional: chopped green onions or parsley, for garnish
Instructions:
-
Rinse the rice and set it aside.
-
Sauté the veggies:
-
In a large skillet or pot, heat oil or butter over medium heat.
-
Add onion, bell pepper, celery, and garlic. Cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
-
-
Brown the meat:
-
Add the ground meat and optional chicken livers.
-
Cook until browned and fully cooked, breaking it up as it cooks. Season with Cajun seasoning, thyme, salt, and pepper.
-
-
Add rice and broth:
-
Stir in uncooked rice until well-coated in the fat and spices.
-
Pour in chicken broth, bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer.
-
-
Simmer and cook:
-
Cover and cook on low for 18–20 minutes, or until rice is tender and liquid is absorbed.
-
Fluff with a fork, taste and adjust seasoning.
-
-
Garnish and serve:
-
Top with green onions or parsley and serve hot.
-
🔥 Tips:
-
You can substitute liver with more ground meat if preferred.
-
Spice it up with cayenne or hot sauce if you like it extra bold.
