Beer Can Chicken
Beer Can Chicken is a flavorful and juicy way to cook a whole chicken using a can of beer (or another beverage) to help keep the bird moist while it cooks. The result is a tender, juicy chicken with a crispy, golden skin—perfect for grilling or roasting. This recipe is simple but results in incredibly delicious chicken every time.
Ingredients:
-
1 whole chicken (about 3-4 lbs)
-
1 can of beer (12 oz) – or another beverage like soda, cider, or even a flavored broth
-
2 tablespoons olive oil
-
1 tablespoon salt
-
1 tablespoon black pepper
-
1 tablespoon paprika
-
1 teaspoon garlic powder
-
1 teaspoon onion powder
-
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme (optional)
-
1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary (optional)
-
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for a little heat)
-
1 lemon, halved (optional, for added flavor)
-
Fresh herbs (optional, for garnish)
Instructions:
-
Prepare the Chicken:
-
Remove the giblets and any excess fat from the chicken and pat it dry with paper towels. Drying the chicken helps achieve crispy skin.
-
Rub the chicken all over with olive oil. This will help the seasonings stick and the skin crisp up during cooking.
-
-
Season the Chicken:
-
In a small bowl, mix together the salt, black pepper, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, thyme, rosemary, and cayenne pepper (if using).
-
Generously rub the seasoning mix all over the chicken, making sure to coat both the outside and the inside of the cavity. If you’d like, you can also stuff the chicken with the halved lemon and some fresh herbs for extra flavor.
-
-
Prepare the Beer Can:
-
Open the can of beer and pour out (or drink) about 1/4 of it, so that there’s enough liquid left to create steam during cooking.
-
Place the beer can in a holder or stand (if you have one) or directly in the chicken’s cavity. Gently slide the chicken onto the can, so that the can is standing upright inside the bird and the chicken is balanced on the can (the can acts as the “base” for the chicken to stand).
-
-
Grill or Roast the Chicken:
-
Grill Method: Preheat your grill to medium heat (about 350°F or 175°C). If you’re using a charcoal grill, arrange the coals on either side of the grill to create indirect heat. Place the chicken (with the beer can) upright in the center of the grill over the indirect heat zone, away from the flames.
-
Cover the grill and cook for 1-1.5 hours, depending on the size of your chicken, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C) when measured at the thickest part of the chicken (usually the breast or thigh).
-
-
Oven Method: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Place the chicken (with the beer can) in a roasting pan or on a baking sheet. Roast for 1-1.5 hours, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C).
-
-
Rest and Serve:
-
Once the chicken is done, carefully remove it from the grill or oven and allow it to rest for 10-15 minutes. This will help the juices redistribute throughout the meat.
-
When ready to serve, carefully remove the beer can (it will be hot!) and carve the chicken.
-
-
Optional Garnish:
-
Garnish with fresh herbs like parsley or thyme for an added touch of freshness.
-
Tips:
-
Beer Substitutes: You can use soda (such as cola, root beer, or lemon-lime soda) or even cider for a different flavor. The carbonation helps keep the chicken moist and tender.
-
Internal Temperature: Always check the internal temperature of the chicken. It should be at least 165°F (74°C) for safety.
-
Crispy Skin: If you want extra crispy skin, you can place the chicken under the broiler for a few minutes at the end of cooking to brown it further.
This Beer Can Chicken is incredibly juicy and flavorful, with minimal effort required. The beer-infused steam keeps the meat moist while the seasoning adds delicious depth to the flavor!
