🍠 Classic Candied Yams
Ingredients:
-
3–4 large yams or sweet potatoes (about 2 to 2½ lbs), peeled and sliced into thick rounds
-
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
-
1/2 cup brown sugar (light or dark)
-
1/4 cup granulated sugar
-
1 tsp cinnamon
-
1/4 tsp nutmeg
-
1/4 tsp ground ginger (optional)
-
1/4 tsp salt
-
1 tsp vanilla extract
-
Optional: 1/2 cup mini marshmallows (for topping)
Instructions:
-
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
-
Layer the yams
Place the sliced yams evenly in the baking dish. -
Make the syrup
In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Stir in brown sugar, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and salt. Simmer for 2–3 minutes until smooth and syrupy. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla. -
Pour & bake
Pour the syrup evenly over the yams, covering all slices well. Cover the dish with foil. -
Bake covered for 30 minutes. Then remove foil and spoon the syrup over the yams.
-
Bake uncovered for another 20–25 minutes, or until yams are tender and caramelized.
(Optional: During the last 5 minutes, sprinkle marshmallows on top and broil until golden.) -
Serve warm
Spoon extra syrup over the yams when serving.
✅ Tips:
-
For richer flavor, use dark brown sugar.
-
Want it sweeter? Add a drizzle of maple syrup or honey.
-
You can make these a day ahead — they reheat beautifully.
